Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park covers an area of 200,000 acres in the west of Virginia. I took a road called Skyline Drive which meanders along the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains for over 100 miles.

There are lots of viewpoints where you look out over the scenery below.

Many trails wind through the trees and there are some nice waterfalls.

There is a lot of wildlife in the park. I saw a couple of snakes crossing the road – slowly but the cars stopped and waited. I saw a hummingbird and the tiger swallowtail butterfly.

The highlight of the day was when I drove round a bend to see a black bear sitting in the middle of the road. Unfortunately it wandered into the trees before I could grab my camera.
